A recorder is a very inexpensive way to begin learning to read music. Most instruments cost hundreds of dollars; the recorder, just a few. This First Note Recorder is an inexpensive, plastic recorder for young children to begin. (Not however for toddlers. You don't want your child to fall with a recorder in the mouth!)
